Many retail stores have struggled during these difficult economic times as more people are choosing to keep their money in their wallets. In a decade of struggles, frustrations and racial conflict, the 2001 Maui Invitational represented the lone bright spot this decade for Ball State's men's basketball program. Defeating a pair of top-five opponents in consecutive nights, Petie Jackson, Theron Smith and coach Tim Buckley put the Cardinals program back on the national map. DN Decade: Ball State community looks back on Letterman visit

In September 2007, Talk show host David Letterman visited Ball State University's campus for the dedication of the newly constructed David Letterman Communication and Media Building.About 5,000 people gathered outside Letterman Building on Sept. 7 to see the ceremony. The crowd stretched to Shafer Tower and down McKinley Avenue.


DN DECADE: BorgWarner's closing representative of changing economy

The BorgWarner plant sits empty between Muncie and Yorktown on Kilgore Avenue, a former symbol of greater economic and industrial times. The million-square-foot factory once housed up to 6,000 employees, making parts for World War II Jeeps, Corvettes and Ford F-150s, to name a few. It closed in April, eliminating 780 jobs and ending more than 100 years of union industry in Muncie.



DN Decade: Reliving Michael McKinney's death, six years later

A Ball State University student was shot and killed by University Police Officer Robert Duplain in November 2003.Toxicology reports later showed that the student, Michael McKinney, had a blood alcohol content of .343 at the time he was shot. Now, members of the Ball State community affected by the incident remember the five-year ordeal.


DN DECADE: Sursa Hall built for the sound of music

Robert Kvam, dean of the college of fine arts, said production on the David and Mary Jane Sursa Performance Hall continued until the last minute on Sept. 22, 2004. When the concert hall's first performance by violinist Midori and pianist Robert McDonald was scheduled, construction workers weren't quite done.


DN DECADE: Emens shows educate, inspire

For the past 19 years, Bob Myers, director at John R. Emens Auditorium, has seen a lot of events pass through the doors, but one thing hasn't changed."We try to increase the number of shows each year, but there's always room for more," he said.From racy comedians to opera singers to lip-syncing students, over 280 performances have graced the Emens stage during the past 10 years.



SCENE SELECTION: 'The Princess and the Frog' revisits classic Disney animation

Where do I even start when it comes to Disney? On one hand, you have Pixar and all that John Lasseter has done to revitalize the company. On another limb – I'm going to say a foot – you have the tween flicks like Hannah Montana, which deserve to be banished to the realm of the television network they own. Then there are the cheesy knock-offs of amusement park rides and terrible remakes.


City Council meeting to discuss future of Muncie animal shelter

Ball State University animal lovers are expected to show up in support of the Muncie Animal Shelter at the City Council meeting tonight in downtown Muncie.Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley announced last week the shelter would be closing Dec. 31 due to budget cuts that would leave it understaffed.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards collapse in overtime, lose 86-81 on road to Tennessee Tech

Ball State (3-4) was led again by sophomore center Jarrod Jones, who had a double-double with a game-high-tying 18 points and a game-best 10 rebounds and three blocks. Three other Cardinals reached double-digit point totals, as Scaife and sophomore guard Randy Davis each scored 13 points and junior forward Malik Perry added 10 points.
