THE BOGEYMAN: Religions should better understand each other

Two weeks ago Friday, the tabernacle at St Francis of Assisi - the church on the east side of the intersection of Riverside and New York avenues - was stolen. The parish community reacted with shock and horror. By Church law, no mass may be celebrated in a space defiled by sacrilege and the theft of a tabernacle is considered sacrilege.

OUR VIEW: No worries

The first week of classes is easy. We usually just go over syllabuses and our professors' expectations of us before getting into the material. Some of us just blow this part off. Week two is cool. We may get our first reading and homework assignments, maybe a heads-up on the first project.

SCENE SELECTION: Older movies worth watching this weekend

The '80s are memorable for bad hair, bright clothes, bodacious vocabulary and cheesy pop cinema. It is interesting to witness a return to these styles around campus with the cheap neon sunglasses, windbreakers and even some hairstyles. John Hughes thrived on the angst of teenage youth through films like "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

OUR VIEW: Time to come home

It's almost Homecoming time again - time for bed races down Riverside Avenue, fashion and talent shows, and bonfires and parties among other things. Homecoming - Sept. 28 to Oct. 3 - is always linked to sports and in our case it's a football game. We were excited about the past two Homecomings because of our football team.

FOOTBALL: White catching on early

It seemed fitting that wide receiver Seth White caught Kelly Page's first career touchdown pass. After all that was the way it was ordained in spring, when Ball State University got its first look at both freshmen. Neither had played a game in a Cardinals jersey before, but with the connection Nate Davis and Dante Love displayed for three seasons fresh in fans' minds, Page and White seemed like the next dynamic duo.

Thrift stores: Style without the price tag

If students are looking to spend less and save more for the school year, fashion merchandising instructor Aubrey Robbins recommends shopping at thrift stores to find classic-looking pieces and accessories. "Take a basic pair of jeans and a tee and you can dress it up with accessories.

FROM THE HOOD: Students should become more politically active

Imagine a world where you are free to express your opinion but can have your phone tapped without a warrant. In this world you can have an ambulance arrive to an emergency in mere minutes and rush you to a hospital only so you can be turned away for not having health insurance.

OUR VIEW: Spending for speaking

The lineup of speakers at Ball State University is smaller this year. But, the prominence and value on the schedule make up for whatever disadvantage a lack of numbers poses. Money is tough to come by these days, so student and university organizations found the obvious, but right, solution of pooling their resources to bring somewhat big names to campus to offer their sage-like advice and insight.
