Muddy tradition continues

Ball State University students have until Monday to turn in team applications for the 22nd annual BotSwin Mud Volleyball tournament on Sept. 26 and 27. Luke Donohoo, Botsford/Swinford residence hall director, said interested students can pick up applications for the tournament from most residence halls' front desks.


Muncie couple arrested for marijuana possession

A Muncie couple was arrested for growing and possession of marijuana Wednesday, according to Indiana State Police. Rita Williams, 57, and Stephen P. Shelton, 61, -- both of 4108 W. 400 South -- were growing marijuana and their residence. The activity was visually confirmed by state troopers from a helicopter.


New health care bill mandates coverage

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Max Baucus on Wednesday brought out the much-awaited Finance Committee version of an American health-system remake - a landmark $856 billion, 10-year measure that starts a rough ride through Congress without visible Republican backing.


Homecoming royalty voting on par with previous years

Chanel Richards, publicity spokeswoman for the Homecoming Steering Committee, said 3,638 students participated in royalty voting this year. Up to three votes could be cast for both the student king and student queen candidates, amounting to 24,822 total votes, she said.



FIELD HOCKEY: Cards overpowered in 7-1 MAC-opening loss to Miami

The loss makes for the fourth in a row for Ball State after starting out the season with back-to-back wins against Davidson College and Appalachian State University. The Cardinals are now 2-4 (0-1 Mid-American Conference), while the RedHawks (2-4) hold a 2-0 record in MAC play.

House passes overhaul of college aid program, raises Pell Grant amount

WASHINGTON - The House has voted in favor of the biggest overhaul of college aid programs since their creation in the 1960s - a bill to oust private lenders from the student loan business and put the government in charge. Thursday's vote was 253-171 in favor of a bill that fulfills an array of President Barack Obama's campaign promises, ending subsidies for private lenders, boosting Pell Grants for needy students and paying for community college reforms, among other things.



Students prepare for Fall Career Fair

Students said they are much more prepared for life after college following the Ball State University Career Center's third "Focus on Your Future" presentation. The series is aimed at helping students overcome job market hurdles, and the theme of Wednesday's seminar was how to approach a job fair, especially the Fall Career Fair next week.


SOCCER: Cardinals prepare for final non-conference match

Despite earning their first win this season last Sunday, coach Michael Lovett and the soccer team are taking precautions not to become complacent for Friday's match against Lipscomb University. The win gave the team a breath of relief, and the team morale has been positive this week in practice.


Study abroad fair to take place in Atrium

The Rinker Center for International Programs will host a study abroad fair today in the Atrium in the Art and Journalism Building. Professors from various departments will be there to promote their field studies, the Office of Financial Aid and Ball State Federal Credit Union will be on hand, and representatives from the Kentucky Institute for International Studies and AHA International programs will also be there to discuss how students can study abroad through their organizations.


Myles Brand dies at age 67 from pancreatic cancer

INDIANAPOLIS - NCAA president Myles Brand, who while leading Indiana University fired basketball coach Bob Knight, died Wednesday afternoon from pancreatic cancer. He was 67. The first former university president ever to run college sports' largest governing body, Brand worked to change the perception that wins supersede academics and earned accolades for his efforts.

Students help downtown businesses

A select number of students from the telecommunications, journalism and communication studies departments are stepping outside the classroom and working close to the local community. Telecommunications instructors Christopher Flook and Elizabeth Pike started Downtown Muncie Business Showcase, an immersive learning program that will promote downtown businesses by collaborating with Indiana Films.


CROSS COUNTRY: Team hopes forgoing meet last weekend helps this weekend

After an 18-day break, the Ball State University cross country team will run against 24 teams from across the state in the Indiana Intercollegiates Friday when it travels to Terre Haute. After dropping out of their meet in Bloomington last Saturday, the Cardinals are looking to shake off the rust as they battle the likes of Indiana and Purdue this Friday.


Church hosts on-campus pig roast

The Revolution, a Ball State University church community, knows the way to students' hearts - through their stomachs. The fourth annual "Pignic" pig roast was held on the University Green and was open to everyone free of charge. The event featured plenty of food, including pulled pork sandwiches, corn on the cob with butter dipping sauce, baked beans and brownies.
