Lockdown warning lifted at Chicago university

CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities have lifted the lockdown of a building on Northwestern University's Chicago campus. The school issued an alert earlier on Wednesday for people in the Rubloff Building to stay in offices with the doors locked after reports of a possible gunman inside an 11th floor elevator.

Finance committee discusses budget cut ideas

The Finance and Business Affairs Committee reconvened Wednesday for the first time since April to begin hashing out ideas about Ball State University's plan to cut the budget. Randy Howard, vice president of Business Affairs and treasurer, said President Jo Ann Gora and her cabinet plan to utilize groups already in place when determining how to cut the university's budget. The Finance and Business Affairs Committee is one such group.


Co-workers describe man who died as upbeat

Joseph Nay is remembered for being upbeat and personable with a big soft spot. The 54-year-old electrician died suddenly late Tuesday in Teachers College from an apparent heart attack. He spent about half his life employed at Ball State University starting in 1983.

The Student Government Association is looking to students for ideas on the budget. SGA is asking students for their opinion on possible budget cuts and new sources of revenue. Ball State University needs to cut roughly $5 million by June 30, but Randy Howard, vice president of Business Affairs and treasurer, said this amount is flexible.

Sorority event to benefit ARF a success

Music blared as about 100 students dressed in animal print clothing danced in a dimly lit room in the Fine Arts Building and Museum of Art. Brightly colored balloons in green, purple and pink with animal print designs decorated the room, and food items such as animal crackers and zebra cakes were available in dog bowls.

An increase in the number of international programs is attracting more students to study in other countries. The Rinker Center for International Programs at Ball State University had its study abroad fair Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Atrium.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State loses to Akron in overtime

Akron hit 22-of-25 (88 percent) of its free throws in the game and out-rebounded Ball State 45-40. Both teams struggled to hang on to the ball on offense, as the Zips totaled 20 turnovers and the Cardinals tallied 21.
