Muncie restaurants participate in week-long fundraiser

Two local restaurants participated in a fundraiser benefiting Share Our Strength, a foundation working to end childhood hunger. The fundraiser, called the "Great American Dine Out," started last Sunday and lasted through the week, ending Saturday. Across the United States, more than 1,000 restaurants registered to take part in the fundraiser.



ATHLETICS: Soccer and Field Hockey to think Pink this weekend

To help raise breast cancer awareness, the Ball State University soccer and field hockey teams will be taking part in the "Think Pink" initiative this weekend. The athletics department is encouraging those who attend the games to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.


Day of Atonement

Today, the hustle and bustle of traffic, honking horns and police sirens are gone. Every store is closed, every car is still and everything is quiet. People could even take naps in the middle of streets or highways. Corey Gillman, president of the Ball State University Hillel organization, wouldn't recommend that in Muncie.



OUR VIEW: Spreading the word

Ball State is in the midst of an intense competition with other schools in Indiana. With the economy in disarray, people are realizing the importance of a college education when competing for a job. More potential students means the university must work harder on recruitment.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Felton out with injury as Rio returns

The injury bug continues to plague the women's volleyball team just as junior Alyssa Rio returned from injury after missing a month, back up setter red-shirt freshman Andrea Felton is now on the injured list. "It's sort of ridiculous isn't it?" coach Dave Boos said.


Annual bonfire will follow Homecoming games tonight

Ball State University's annual Homecoming bonfire is happening tonight at 9 p.m., following the Opening Day Games. This year's bonfire will include a performance by the Ball State drumline, an introduction to the football team by athletic director Tom Collins and performances from the Code Red Dancers and Ball State cheerleaders.


CALIFORNIA KIRCHUBEL: Homecoming should be best week of year

Yesterday marked the first day of what could be the best week of the year, according to all the flyers posted around campus at least. Homecoming Week kicked off with a week-long scavenger hunt during which students will scuttle around campus searching high and low for the secret location of Charlie Cardinal.



THE BOGEYMAN: Appearance of intelligent design not proof

Jay L. Wile, formerly of the Ball State University Department of Chemistry, was on campus Tuesday. He's the author of the Apologia home school science curriculum and a noted speaker on creationism, and that's what he was talking about. His lecture was entitled, "The Earth: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made;" it was a presentation of various wonderful and awe-inspiring features of the natural world that seem to point to a model that involves a designer.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Coach disappointed with team's performance as Western Michigan sweeps Ball State

The anticipated showdown turned into a nightmare for the Ball State University women's volleyball team. On a night that the expectation was to show they belong, the Cardinals were shown how much further they still have to go. Western Michigan University, a 2008 Sweet 16 team, overcame an out of sync offense early to sweep Ball State 25-20, 25-14, 25-18 on Saturday at Worthen Arena.

MEN'S TENNIS: Rain dampens Ball State Invitational

Once the sun replaced the rain clouds at the Ball State Fall Invitational, the Cardinals ended up with a decent weekend against a 14-team field. Sophomore Cliff Morrison and freshman Alex Doherty had deep runs in their singles tournaments. Junior Eduardo Pavia and freshman Dalton Albertin advanced to the doubles championship match.


FOOTBALL: Page plays with more confidence at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. - The crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium roared as Auburn University took the field before Saturday's game against Ball State University. It wouldn't stop for hours. The announced crowd of 83,118 cheered every good play by the Tigers and the marginal ones too.


FIELD HOCKEY: Ball State shows improvement, but drops seventh straight game

Ball State University was overwhelmed in their first Mid-American Conference game, but played better in their second MAC game against Central Michigan University on Saturday. However, the 4-1 loss gave the Cardinals the same result, putting them at 0-2 in conference play and 2-7 overall.
