BOOZERS AND LOSERS: Enjoy the holiday season, whichever you celebrate

Last weekend, I was waiting in a checkout line, clutching a few Christmas gifts and wondering how many Reese trees I really wanted when I heard the familiar chime of jingle bells overhead. Although Christmas music had been playing the duration of my shopping, I only recognized its irony as I pulled out my wallet, a warm voice singing, "You better watch out. You better not cry. Better not pout, I'm telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town!"

The average Ball State University student will graduate with more than $23,000 in student loan debt. For some who will have trouble finding a job in their field for a while, that could be more than an entire year's pay.


BSU official says 1st snow worked out 'easily'

Ball State University crews spent the early Monday morning sweeping snow off sidewalks with power brooms and putting salt down on the roads as needed, Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of Facilities, Planning and Management, said."It worked out pretty easily," he said. "I don't think there was anything unusual ... We just did what we normally do."


Rhythms Dance Troupe expresses "new attitude"

Ball State University students experienced different attitudes expressed through dance Sunday in the Ball Gymnasium. The Rhythms Dance Troupe presented its first fall show. Called "A New Attitude," the group performed dances that portrayed different attitudes, including happiness, frustration and hope.



Snowy roads cause problems for motorists

The first snow has kept Indiana State Police busy this morning.As of 11:30 a.m., state police spokesperson Sgt. Rod Russell announced troopers at the Redkey District, which includes Delaware, Grant, Blackford, Jay and Randolph counties, investigated 22 slide-offs, eight property damage crashes and two minor personal injury crashes.


FOOTBALL: MAC Bowls still uncertain

All five MAC teams with at least seven wins will be invited to a bowl game this year. The conference has tie-ins with three bowls, but the remaining two will still get an invitation because other conferences are unable to fill their slots.



Relay for Life kicks off at Ball State

About 40 students were recruited by the end of the Relay for Life Kickoff party Friday night at the Ball State University Museum of Art Ballroom. It was open to any students interested in participating in the fifth-annual Relay for Life at Ball State on April 23 and 24.


GYMNASTICS: Ball State sophomore excels in exhibition match vs. Kentucky

Sophomore Brittney Emmons showed that she was ready to put the Mid-American Conference on notice. Emmons scored a 38.35 in the all-around to lead the Ball State University gymnastics team in its exhibition meet against the University of Kentucky. Emmons almost tracked down 2009 Southeastern Conference freshman of the year Whitney Rose, who won the all-around with a 38.8.



Ball State to address state funding cuts

State funding for Ball State University and other Indiana public colleges will be reduced by $150 million during the next two years, Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday morning.The budget cuts are part of Daniels' plan to cut overall spending in response to lower than expected state revenues.Daniels will give the Indiana Commission on HIgher Education 30 days to identify spending cuts, which all state universities must share.


Unification with holiday celebration

On Thursday, dozens of students flocked to Park Hall for food, fellowship and tradition as the Multicultural Center's second annual Kwanzaa Celebration began.


Scotty's offers free dill chips for toys

Scotty's Brewhouse announced Friday afternoon that it is participating in this year's Toys For Tots program and anyone who donates a toy to the Village restaurant will receive a free order of dill chips.


MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State hoping to end semester on high note

Although the calendar has turned the page to December, the Ball State University men's swimming and diving team has no intentions of getting an early start on Winter Break. On Friday, Ball State hosts Eastern Illinois University at 6 p.m. The Cardinals get no rest as they head to Indianapolis the following day to take part in a quad-meet against IUPUI, Western Illinois University and Saint Louis University. It will be the second time that the Cardinals have traveled to IUPUI this season, as they placed second in the IUPUI House of Champions tournament November 13 and 14.

GYMNASTICS: Ball State to host exhibition against Kentucky

Coach Nadalie Walsh is trying to answer one question."It's still early, but where are we as a team?" she said.Walsh hopes to find answers this Saturday when the Ball State University women's gymnastics team hosts the University of Kentucky in an exhibition meet at 1 p.m. in Worthen Arena. This will be the first exhibition meet that the Cardinals have held during Walsh's tenure. In previous seasons, the team has held an intrasquad exhibition to prepare for the regular season, she said.
