MUNCIE, Ind. — Muncie's Old West End is about to start a major re-development. At the end of 2023, Muncie Land Bank created a proposal for the READI 2.0 grant to help work through renovations and help create ways for community development. The purpose of READI 2.0 is to fund projects that strengthen the quality of the community, attract and retain members and position Indiana communities for long-term economic growth. Through the grant, the Old West End was given 3.2 million dollars for renovations.

“This project is going to start around 500 West Howard and then go all the way down Council Street. It will also then go to the 700 or 800 block of West Powers,” Neighborhood Association President Brad King said.

Construction for new and revamped homes is slated to start within the next few months, with more than 30 properties being added. Most of them will be listed as affordable housing with some being listed at market price. Muncie Land Bank worked with local non-profits, and even Ball State University students, to brainstorm layouts and other development ideas.

“Our philosophy is to work on block by block development,” Muncie Land Band Executive Director Nate Howard said. “This is where we focus all of our resources and bring other groups to the table in a concentrated manner. We do this so we can actually be a catalyst.”

Although the project has seen a quick turnaround this has been years in the making.

"This is really a personal and professional dream come true to be able to actually build housing in an old neighborhood that people thought the city had forgotten about. I think that people that have lived here a long time feel forgotten, and I think that this is going to change the way that looks for folks,"  King said.

When the initial redevelopment is finished, the Land Bank is also looking to create and update the existing business to offer more quality of life for local residents. On top of the project in the Old West End, Muncie Land Bank is working to revamp other neighborhoods in Muncie, like Whiting and Avondale/Thomas Park.
