MUNCIE, Ind. - On Wednesday afternoon, the brothers of Phi Delta Theta braved the heat to help spread awareness for their philanthropy. Freeze-A-Phi offered the opportunity for students and staff to purchase an ice bucket to be dumped on the head of one of the brothers. Their philanthropy, ‘Live Like Lou’, helps fundraise for those who suffer from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Luke Barnes, a senior brother, said he didn’t fully understand the effects of ALS until he met someone who was affected by the disease. But, getting to see it up close changed something in him.
“Honestly, ever since then, I just have a love for charity and philanthropy, and wanting to help people out,” Barnes said.
This is the second year that Phi Delta Theta has held the fundraiser. And, the members say they hope it becomes a yearly tradition. Ice buckets weren’t the only thing you could buy to support the brothers as they sold snow cones as well. All the money they raised went directly to an ALS charity foundation.
“All our money goes towards them and they help support ALS families and fund research as well,” said Jacksoon Hoover, Phi Delta Theta’s philanthropy chair.
The brothers sold plenty of snow cones, and endured the cold chill of the ice bucket as well. Those who bought the ice buckets took every ounce of opportunity to soak the brother of their choosing. All the patrons walked away with a smile on their faces, saying that it was worth every penny.
