MUNCIE, Ind. - The Transfer Student Organization (TSO) is back on campus. Last fall, students on the Transfer Student Advisory Board began to talk about the prospect of bringing the organization back.
“I talked with the peers that I was on the Transfer Student Advisory Board with, and that’s how we decided to reintegrate TSO into student organizations,” said Maya Queroz, President of TSO.
In the spring, the board got their wish and TSO was officially added to the list of student organizations again. However, this semester, Queroz has found herself alone on the executive board.
“At the end of the year, everyone graduated,” she said.
Queroz balances all the positions, taking on all the responsibilities.
“My main responsibility is being visible as a transfer student, and being always open to talk to, and have a line of communication with. Aside from that, I do all of the planning ahead for the meetings, do all of the graphics, all of the social media, and all the reservations with the school.”
Queroz spoke highly of her transfer advisor, saying they had her back if she ever needed any help with anything. And, Queroz says she likes helping other transfer students. As a transfer student herself, Queroz struggled to find a community when she first arrived on campus.
“I want to be more involved with that part of the academic journey for some people because I don’t want people to have some of the same struggles that I did.”
Positive on the outlook for the group, Queroz said they’re always looking to help transfer students find a place where they can be comfortable. Next week, the organization will celebrate National Transfer Student Week. The group is having different events throughout the week to help honor the students. On Monday, they’ll be serving hot chocolate and cookies at the Scramble Light. On Wednesday, they offer the chance for students to smash a pumpkin and relieve some stress. And on Friday, students will have the opportunity to meet a therapy dog brought in by Advanced Canine Techniques. Transfer students who are interested in joining the organization can learn more on BeConnected.
