MUNCIE, Ind. – Living in the same room with another person can be hard for first-year students to adjust to. These North neighborhood students are making sure that doesn’t happen. On Sept. 9, Botsford-Swinford Hall hosted a “Roommate Mixer” for any student in need of a new roommate.
Located in the MPR (Multi-Purpose Room) in the lobby of Botsford-Swinford Hall, students with half-empty dorms mixed and mingled to find a new roommate for the school year. Freshman and Botsford-Swinford resident Maddox Hinton noted a certain anxiety over the subject.
“I’m pretty excited, but I’m also kind of nervous that I’m not going to find a new roommate,” said Hinton.
Hinton’s roommate transferred shortly after the semester started, leaving the room with an empty bed and only one occupant. Hinton later received an email detailing her choices as the only resident in a double room. She could either find a new roommate for the year or pay the adjusted rate for a single in a double room.
Hoping to dodge the fee, Hinton attended the Roommate Mixer. Starting at 6 p.m., the mixer allowed students to meet and greet one another, taking advantage of the perks that Botsford-Swinford’s MPR has to offer, including a piano, pool tables, TVs and even a table set up as a “Mocktail” bar.
Dozens of students attended the mixer, with many finding a new roommate for the rest of the academic year. After participating in the mixer, Hinton found a roommate, dodging the fee and building a new connection that hopefully would last a lifetime.
