MUNCIE, Ind. — The Annual Family Weekend at Ball State University returns and reunites students, family and friends. Starting on Sept.12, the weekend celebration began with various performances and ceremonies hosted by the Office of Student Life.
The celebration continued on Sept.13, kicking off with the first home football game. Despite the stormy weather that came, the happiness shone right through.
Another event held was the Cardinal Family Bash at the University Green, which hosted carnival games, music and hands-on activities.
“Family Weekend at Ball State is an opportunity for our families, support networks, found-family, chosen-family, whatever it may be for the student,” Olivia Vecchiolli, Associate Director of Student Life, said. “To come and experience what campus life is like for their student now that they’ve been here for a little bit.”
However, this is more than just a celebration; it’s about connection. For many students, college can be stressful and overwhelming, sometimes leaving students isolated. A study by the Healthy Minds Network stated that 44% of students reported depression, 37% said they experienced anxiety, and 15% said they considered suicide after beginning college.
The time spent back together with families is essential.
“You can’t make it without support,” Vecchiolli said. “You need either a friend or a family member that’s just there to listen, there to show up for you and really encourage you when you’re down. We all know college can be really difficult sometimes…”
Family weekend reminds students that they are not alone. Even through the struggles of college, support from family and friends can make all the difference.
If you or someone you know is struggling, you can call 988, the suicide and crisis hotline.
