Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell announced Wednesday he will step down from his position as as leader in November, according to AP.
McConnell said he will serve out his term as a senator until January 2027, regardless of this announcement. McConnell's aides said this decision is unrelated to his health, though having two public instances where he briefly froze while speaking last year.
The senator has been experiencing increased pressure to step down from members within his party, many of whom are former President Donald Trump supporters.
McConnell has served as the Republican leader since 2006, winning nine straight elections. In 2023, he became the longest-serving Senate leader in history.
