U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, a Democrat, was elected into the Senate in 1992. Feinstein, who died Thursday night in her Washington, D.C. home, has been described as “a pioneering American,” a “true trailblazer” and a “cherished friend” by President Joe Biden.
Her death came after a case of shingles that happened two months earlier in the year. She later returned to the Senate in a wheelchair in May.
Feinstein was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969 and became the first female board president in 1978. She later served as San Francisco's first female mayor.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom will appoint a temporary replacement for her.
