Mayor, police provide updates on Sunday’s mass shooting

The street where the shooting took place was blocked off by police Sunday morning.

MUNCIE, Ind. (NewsLink) --- Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour and officials with the Muncie Police Department provided an update on the early morning shooting that killed one person and injured 17.

“On Sunday morning, our community was shaken to the core by violence,” Mayor Ridenour said in Monday’s press conference.

Around 1:15 a.m., first responders received a call for multiple people shot in the area of S. Hackley St. and E. Willard St. Multiple agencies in surrounding counties were called in due to the large number of victims.

When they arrived, they found multiple people shot. Police confirmed Monday the person who died as 30-year-old Joseph Bonner. According to Deputy Chief Melissa Criswell, two of the victims are juveniles. Another victim was ran over by a car.

According to Police Chief Nathan Sloan, the shooting took place at a large party with hundreds of people in the street. Police knew about the gathering, but the number of people grew throughout the evening.

"We tried to contact the property owner to get the party shut down," said Sloan.

As of Monday’s press conference, five people are still at Ball Memorial Hospital while four people were taken to a hospital in Indianapolis.

No arrests have been made. Detectives are conducting interviews with victims to gather more information. Police are encouraging anyone who may have information to contact the Detective Division at (765)-747-4867.

Mayor Ridenour also said he is working to create solutions to stop gun violence in the city as well as providing relief to the victims and their families.

There will be a prayer vigil tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Berea Church.
