The Ball State University Student Government Association (SGA) held its last meeting of the legislative term, starting out with four budget requests.

The first was for the Earth Day Fair on the University Green April 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“The expenses will include all of the food we'll be giving out, all the prizes and anything else that we deem necessary,” Treasurer Mamed Ramazanli said. “That would include giving out tote bags, [and] we're thinking about also buying reusable straws and reusable utensil sets, a lot of prizes to really get students engaged in this. I'm really hoping that this event will become annual so  this will be another way we can reach out to our students.”

The request passed unanimously.

The second request was for a summer garden caretaker for the soon to be opened community garden on West Cardinal Street. This position would have someone working nine hours a week over the summer, paid $7.40 an hour. There is an application available on Cardinal Career links.

The request passed unanimously.

The third request was for the Student Engagement Committee and its upcoming ice cream social. The event is set for  April 18 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the University Green. The total request was $370.94.

Items will include 100 gourmet ice cream bars and some vegan ice cream sandwiches. The request passed 20-1 with one abstention.

The fourth and final request was for the aforementioned community garden opening party, including $70 for Marigolds as a natural pesticide, $70 for fruit and vegetable trays with lemonade and tea, and $25 for the actual seeds that are going to be planted.

As she gave her final report after two years in her position, President Tina Nguyen was emotional, remembering those who helped her along the way.

“I just want to say thank you to our advisors, because honestly, throughout my two years here, you guys have honestly made me a better person and a better student,” Nguyen, fighting through tears, said. “I don't know where I would be without you guys. For my executive cabinet, honestly, thank you for being my friend and just guiding me through the stresses, because I've been here for four years through SGA and I truly do love this organization.”

Senate Order 11: 22-23 was an order in honor of Nguyen, thanking her for her hard work as president over the past two years.

The next SGA president, Joseph Gassensmith, and vice president, Monet Lindstrand, are set to be inaugurated in the April 19 meeting.
