Don’t feel like driving? MITS is an easy and free alternative.

Driving in traffic can be a hassle and sometimes feels like a chore. Not to mention high gas prices and occasional poor weather conditions. Luckily, there is a great alternative here in Muncie. The Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS) can take you to neighborhoods and businesses all around Muncie. The best part? It’s completely free for students with an ID!

Where can you go?

MITS has 17 different routes across Muncie. This includes stops at Walmart, the Muncie Mall, Target, Ball State campus, Ball Memorial Hospital, Downtown Muncie and more. If you’re looking for an easy way to get around town, gas prices are too high, or you just don’t feel like driving, you can still get where you need to go!

How do you use it?

Public transportation can seem tricky at first. Luckily, MITS has a lot of resources to make it easier. The first is the Trip Planner on the MITS website. Simply put in where you’re coming from and where you’re going, and it will tell you which stops to get on and off at, and which buses to get on. You can also access the schedules for each bus route on the site. Additionally, there is the MITS app (available on Apple and Google Play) which allows you to track buses in real time and see estimated arrival times.

What are the benefits?

Beyond offering you a completely free and easy way to get around Muncie, MITS is also safe and eco-friendly. A single commuter switching to MITS will reduce about 5,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Per year, public transportation saves people 4,400 miles of driving, 223 gallons of gas, 273 hours stuck in traffic, and $10,000 in fuel in maintenance costs.

Accessibility

MITS takes pride in ensuring everyone can easily use these services. All buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps. You can also apply for MITSPlus, which is a service providing door-to-door transportation for individuals with a disability that prevents them from using the fixed bus route.

Additionally, if you have a bike, you can bring it along for the ride! All buses have bike racks. If you’d rather bike to your stop than walk, MITS has you covered!
