The Ball State University Student Government Association (SGA) began their meeting with eight pieces of special business. The first being the approval of Senator Applicant Cody York.

York was the previous representative for Spectrum and has multiple priorities when it comes to improving Ball State, including the improvement of campus transportation, promoting campus as a safe place for all identities and more. His top priority was campus accessibility.

York was approved with a vote of 23-0 with two abstentions.

Aliyah Lane presented for approval as a representative for the Mock Trial organization and was approved to the organizational caucus with a vote of 24-1 with one abstention.

Grayson Cates then made his case for secretary of transportation in the SGA presidential cabinet. Cates noted his focus on MITS (Muncie Indiana Transit System), which is the local public transit system that also runs through campus, providing free transportation for students.

“I want to promote MITS and teach people what it is,” Cates said, “...MITS is a very important system here in Muncie and it can definitely help students get around campus, but they don’t even know what it is.”

He was approved on a vote of 23-1 with three abstentions.

Mike Gillilan, director of student conduct, proposed policy changes in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, as well as the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct policy.

Gillilan noted most changes were minor clarifications and word modifications. Both proposals were approved on a vote of 27-0 with no abstentions.

The following members were approved for the Records and Retention committee: Noah Clark, Brian Truell, Taylor Perry, Isaac Ledford and Clarissa Carrigan. They were approved on a vote of 27-0 with no abstentions.

Taylor Perry and Brian Truell were also approved for the Appeals Board on a 25-1 vote with one abstention.

Senator Noah Steepleton requested a proxy increase due to a busy schedule and bylaw conflicts between the Interfraternity Council and SGA. It was approved in an uncontested vote.

Finally, there was a budget request for $159.95 for gift baskets that will be used in a raffle event. The budget was approved 26-0 with one abstention.

SGA president Tina Nguyen gave her executive report, highlighting One Ball State day.

“One Ball State Day is April 5th,” Nguyen said. “Last year we broke the record for the amount of money donated, and we would love to break the record again. All of the money that’s donated, that helps every student in need.”

There were two pieces of unfinished business. Student Amendment 07:22-23 established that office hours need to be posted publicly and made accessible to students passed on a vote of 26-0 with one abstention.

Student Amendment 08:22-23, which requires officers to give an executive report passed on a vote of 21-5 with one abstention.

In a final announcement, it was noted that 2023 Homecoming Steering Committee applications are now open and close February 22.
