Yorktown football preparing for sectionals

The team finished their regular season with a record of 6-3.

YORKTOWN, Ind.---All season long, fans have witnessed screams, celebrations and first downs for the Yorktown Tigers.

The team enters the postseason led by head coach Mike Wilhelm. Wilhelm is in his 18th season as head coach for Yorktown.

“We had an excellent offseason. Excellent senior class, leadership-wise, junior class is right there with them,” Wilhelm said. “We had a lot of guys not miss anything this offseason and I think that helped us going into this regular season.”

But it is not just Coach Wilhelm who is buying into their culture this season. The team is also led by Junior Quarterback Mason Moulton who explains how fortunate he is to play with his tiger teammates.

“We all put in a lot of work to improve athletically,” Moulton said. “So, we felt really confident going into this year and then I felt like we did a great job translating that onto the football field.”

As big plays come from many players, Senior Kolton Nanko credits the coaching staff for the team’s success.

“Our coaches take a big pride in their scouting reports that they spend hours doing and making, and they don't do it for no reason,” Nanko said. “So I think we’re all big believers that if we go in, study the scouting report, watch film, do it all, that we’ll come out with a good result.”

Yorktown is looking to win its first sectional title since 2014. Their first-round matchup is their Delaware County rival the Delta Eagles.

Wilhelm states that “In a rivalry game, it’s a lot of momentum, we want to get the momentum early on.”

“It’s also sectional football so everyone’s kind of super amped up and ready to play,” Nanko said. “So, I think everyone’s kind of on their work doing their job this week.”

“We just want to go out there and play Yorktown football,” Moulton said. “We know it’s going to be a battle with our rivals, but we’re ready to take that challenge and we trust our ability to advance in the sectional.”

Kickoff at Delta High School will take place at 7 p.m.
