Women's volleyball wins two of three in Lipscomb tournament

Ball State Women’s Volleyball (5-1, 0-0) went 2-1 over three games in the Lipscomb Tournament with two wins Friday against Oklahoma (3-2, 0-0) and the host Bison (2-3, 0-0).

The lone loss for the Cardinals was Saturday afternoon versus Mississippi State (5-0, 0-0). 

Ball State started out tge weekend with a 3-1 (25-17, 29-27, 20-25, 25-16) win over the Sooners. Junior middle Lauren Gilliand helped the Cardinals with a career-high 17 kills and a .533 hitting percentage.

Gilliand contributed on the defensive side with a team-high four blocks.

“I think it was more of a team collective effort for sure,” Gilliand said. “We were able to distribute the offense which is where we found the majority of our success from the weekend.”

Senior opposite Natalie Mitchem added 16 kills and 2 blocks for Ball State in the Friday morning win.

Sophomore, and reigning MAC West Division Setter of the Week, Megan Wielonski raked in 50 assists against their opponent from the Big 12 Conference.

“[Wielonski] was able to distribute the ball with a very balanced attack,” head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. “Our ball control contributes a lot to that and obviously Megan delivers a great ball.”

To close out Friday night, the Cardinals took down Lipscomb in straight sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-18) behind junior outside Cait Snyder’s team-high 11 kills followed by senior outside hitter Natalie Risi’s nine kills. 

In Saturday’s 0-3 (28-30, 16-25, 18-25) loss to the Bulldogs, Gilliand again led the way in kills with 13. Wielonski dished 25 assists and two aces.

Senior middle blocker Marie Plitt made her presence known on defense with a team-high four blocks against Mississippi State.

Ball State looks to build on its record next weekend at Worthen Arena with the Ball State Tournament starting Friday at 10 a.m. against Arkansas State.
