Take control of your budget and future career with accounting classes

Consider adding accounting to your course list!

Many students find themselves ready to explore different academic and career paths, but don’t know what is best for them. This is normal, and now is a perfect time to be curious with the Fall 2022 semester fast approaching. The time for scheduling classes is beginning soon, and The Paul W. Parkison Department of Accounting is a great place to start.

Why Accounting?

A degree in accounting can really take you places! The Department of Accounting offers classes that you can tailor for your specific interests and passions. There are options including auditing, financial accounting, governmental or non-profit accounting, managerial accounting, tax accounting and accounting system information courses.

Not only do these programs offer skills that can be used in the business world, they also offer skills you can use in your everyday life. Even if you are not an accounting major, some of these classes will still benefit you! You will learn how to create budgets, as well as allocate, identify and manage costs, improving your overall professional and personal decision-making process.

There are countless benefits and opportunities open to accounting students. Just a few other examples are:

  • Experiential learning
  • Small class sizes
  • Enriching out of classroom experiences
  • Clear pathway after graduation

Student Involvement

Accounting is not all sitting behind a desk and “crunching the numbers.” There are so many opportunities to meet new people and connect with like-minded individuals through the Accounting Club, the National Association of Black Accountants, and Beta Alpha Psi, which is the fraternity for financial information professionals. All of these are perfect opportunities for self-development, networking and professional skills for excellence in the field.

Success Outside the Classroom

John Ledbetter, the chair of the Paul W. Parkison Department of Accounting, says it best:

“Careers in accounting offer great financial opportunities and interesting assignments both when the economy is good and not so good. Accountants work for companies and people who have questions about money, which means that every firm uses accountants.”

Jobs in accounting are attainable and sustainable. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, job outlook is expected to grow by seven percent before the year 2030. Did you know the average salary of an accountant in the United States is currently $73,560?

The Department of Accounting makes the gateway to career success more accessible through the many internships opportunities that they offer. There are available internships through companies like Deloitte and PwC, multinational companies that are two of the top accounting firms in the world.

There are many options open to you here at Ball State; the Accounting Department is a very valuable one. We will provide you with skills and knowledge you can use in your degree - and beyond. Don't miss out on this opportunity!
