Editor's note: The text of Indiana House Bill 1041 uses language referring to transgender girls as biological males. The Ball State Daily News will follow AP style guidelines and refrain from referencing transgender people as having been born a boy or a girl except in direct quotes.

House Bill 1041, which would ban transgender girls from playing in girls sports in schools, was passed by the Indiana General Assemblyener Tuesday. The bill now moves to Gov. Eric Holcomb's desk for consideration.

The bill seeks to require K-12 schools to designate specific male, female and co-educational athletic teams and to prohibit "a male, based on the student's biological sex at birth in accordance with the student's genetics and reproductive biology, from participating on an athletic team or sport designated as being a female ... team or sport," according to the bill's synopsis.

The bill doesn't expressly say whether the same provisions would be applied to transgender boys.

While Gov. Eric Holcomb hasn't explicitly said whether he would sign the bill, he has signaled support for it in the past.

"I agree adamantly that boys should be playing boy sports and girls should be playing girls sports," he said during a press availability last week.

He also said he'd make a final determination on the bill after he sees "the actual language."
