In Ball State Softball's (1-3) first action of the season, they traveled to Chicago for the DePaul Dome Tournament.

The Cardinals played two games on both Friday and Saturday with one game on Sunday to close out the tournament. How did it shake out?

Home runs came easy for the Cardinals.

In Friday’s first game, the Cardinals fell short against St. Thomas (2-3) by a score of 6-5. Junior third baseman Haley Wynn hit the first home run of the season for the Cardinals and the fourth of her career. Later that night, they beat Western Illinois (2-3) 7-4, and senior center fielder Faith Hensley hit a home run in the third inning.

In Saturday night’s 7-5 loss on Saturday against Seattle (4-0), freshman catcher McKayla Timmons hit a three-run home run off of back-to-back hits from Lissy and senior second baseman Amaia Daniel.

In Sunday's 9-1 loss to Western Illinois, the Cardinals’ only score came from a Lissy home run in the top of the second inning. Here are two takeaways from the tournament:

Sticking to a hot start is important

After Lissy’s home run in the second inning on Sunday, the Leathernecks responded by scoring three runs in the third inning capped off by six runs alone in the bottom of the fifth inning.

A back-and-forth opening contest on Friday against St. Thomas came to an end after the Cardinals let up a two run lead along with a five strikeout performance from Tommies senior pitcher Megan Baniekce.

Wins don’t come from runs alone

The Cardinals’ Friday night win over Western Illinois contributed from pitching by freshman pitcher Angelina Russo, who struck out three batters in six innings and limited the Leathernecks to four runs and three hits.

To close out the game, freshman pitcher Madison Taylor cut Western Illinois to two runs in the entire seventh inning and held the Leathernecks scoreless.

Ball State now looks to next weekends’ Winthrop Kickoff Tournament starting Friday at 10 a.m. against Robert Morris.
