Ball State's Student Government Association (SGA) discussed a variety of upcoming events and initiatives at the meeting Sept. 29 and heard from Karen Adkins, senior director of auxiliary services for university dining, catering and events.

Adkins announced an advisory board for the dining halls around campus and said the board will be open to all students, whether they are living on or off campus.

At the meeting, senators also discussed the Oct. 1 climate strike on campus, organized by the Community and Environmental Affairs committee. The event will be hosted on the University Green 3:30–5:30 p.m.

“The event is an open forum to talk about general campus issues we're passionate about on campus and in the community," Senator Monet Lindstrand said.

The strike began in September 2019 in response to the California forest fires amid governmental inaction on the federal level.

“The event is to honor the progress we've made, but also to talk about what we need to do," Lindstrand said.

SGA President Tina Nguyen also reminded senators of the upcoming diversity deep dive, an event hosted by Spectrum, scheduled for Oct. 6. This event will offer clothing and games, as well as a lesson on the LGBTQ community's relationship with HIV and AIDS.

Vice President Chiara Biddle announced a new campaign under the “encourage” focus in collaboration with Dining Services at the meeting. A film program, tentatively titled "Movie Night,” is being considered as a supplement to Friday Night Filmworks, showing movies including “It's A Wonderful Life” and “Halloween Town.”

Senators also heard plans for an outdoor Halloween party hosted by the university on an undisclosed, upcoming Friday, as an alternative to other celebrations of the holiday.

The Academic Affairs committee also announced it was drafting legislation that would require professors to record their lectures and send them to students who have proof of an excused absence.

In addition, the committee also announced preparations for the biannual "Hit the Books Bash.”

To end the meeting, multiple committees announced their collaboration on a sexual assault awareness event to take place later in the semester.
