The City of Muncie will hold an opening ceremony for the splash pad at Cooley Park on Aug. 13 at 4 p.m. Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour will give remarks along with other administration officials and then, they will turn on the park’s splash pad.

Cooley’s renovations, which are a part of the City of Muncie administration’s four-year park plan, include a new splash pad, the construction of a new walking trail, new lighting across the park, renovations to the restroom facilities and planting 22 new trees. The park is located at 3120 S. Mock Ave.

Some of Cooley Park’s planned renovations are still under construction, including work on the park’s basketball courts, parking lot, additional landscaping, an additional playground and water fountains on the structure at the park. An Aug. 13 City of Muncie press release said these will all be completed after the official opening of the splash pad.

The press release said Ridenour decided to open the splash pad as soon as possible so community members can use the facility before the end of the summer season.

The Ridenour administration's goal is to work on the major revitalization of four parks — one in each corner of the city over the next few years. The city has planned revitalization efforts for Cooley Park, Halteman Park, Riverview Park and Thomas Park.

The city is also working on an additional two parks per year across the city with minor updates, including playground equipment. This is partly because of a 16-percent increase in the 2021 city parks budget from what it had been in previous years. This year, work is being done at Morningside and McCulloch parks.
