Two months after approving pay raises for teachers, the Muncie Community Schools (MCS) Board of Trustees voted to increase the hourly pay of support staff to $14 an hour at its meeting July 27.

The previous hourly pay rate was $11.20. Support staff include administrative assistants, instructional assistants, permanent substitute teachers and other positions.

“Our support staff play a crucial role in our day-to-day operations and we are delighted to be able to pay them more appropriately,” MCS Director of Public Education and CEO Lee Ann Kwiatkowski said in a press release. “For people who love being around children and playing a role in their education, we hope this will entice them to join our staff and fill one of our current openings.”

Position openings at MCS can be found online.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, the board decided to table its reopening plan for the district amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidance for mask wearing July 27, and the MCS board will consider this guidance before announcing the reopening plan next week on Aug. 3.
