Fire at apartment building near campus

There was a fire at The District apartments on Bethel Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Monday night.

No injuries were reported at the scene, but Ball State students and apartment residents were displaced because of the fire.

The Muncie Fire Department put out a statement on social media thanking county units who responded to other calls while they dealt with the fire.

"Your assistance is always appreciated," the statement said.

The Red Cross was also called in to help residents affected by the fire.

There is no information about what caused the fire yet.

Abigayle Suding, sophomore aquatics major, lives in Kinghorn Residence Hall and has a police radio scanner on her phone, where she heard about the fire. Suding then passed out water to firefighters to drink.

"I would take some waters over to the firefighter and they would take it from there," Suding said. "They would put it right there on their scene so they had easy access to water."

Suding said when she showed up, the top floor of in a corner of the apartment building was "totally engulfed in flames," and believes there will be water damage to the building because of the amount of water firefighters used to put out the fire.

"There's going to be a lot of water damage ... water was coming off the balconies, it was coming from light fixtures and doorways," Suding said.

Suding is also taking donations for people affected by the fire. So far, she said she has nonperishable foods, clothes, toiletries, feminine hygiene products and blankets.

"Whatever I can get my hands on, I will take," she said.

This story will be updated.
