The Delta Eagles (11-3, 1-2 HHC) have not lost a game at home in nearly two years. That streak continued Friday night, as they moved to 8-0 in their own gym, beating Wapahani (11-4, 2-2 MEC) 54-43.
Delta head coach Mark Detweiler gave a lot of credit to the development of the student section and how it has helped create a fun environment for the team.
“It’s a tough place to play,” Detweiler said. “Our student section is awesome, and our Blue Crew has been great. It has been fun to see them grow, and it is awesome seeing the student section be who they are.”
The Eagles have three players who Detweiler described as the foundation of the team’s success at home. Senior Zach Garner scored nine points, junior Brady Hunt had 12 and senior Josh Greenburg had five.
“We have had guys who have been here the whole run,” Detweiler said. “We have not been beaten here in two years. Zach Garner, Brady Hunt and Greenberg have been here for all of it, and those three have started almost every game.”

The defense is an area in which Detweiler said he takes a lot of pride in with his team. The Eagles allowed Wapahani to its two lowest scoring total this season.
“We take a lot of pride in what we do defensively,” Detweiler said. “We feel like we have been blessed with a couple of really good on-ball defenders, and when you can stay in front of guys, it is hard for them to win.”
Delta went into halftime with a 31-19 lead, but Wapahani came storming back and ended the third quarter down just 39-35. Detweiler attributed it to execution and trust.
“I am just disappointed in our execution as a team in the second half,” Detweiler said. “We have to trust each other more, move the ball a little bit better and play inside out.”
The Eagles were led by Hunt and senior Conner Bedwell with 12 points apiece. Detweiler said Bedwell’s ability in transition is special.
“When he gets downhill, he is great,” Detweiler said. “Getting to the rim, he is one of the best I have had. He is super quick in the open floor, and when we get there, he is super special.”
