Ball State students offer tax help

MUNCIE, Ind. (NewsLink) -- Tax season is here, and you can do your taxes for free on campus.

Free tax preparation is available for eligible students and employees.

This federal program called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is offered to anyone who makes a yearly income under $56,000.

Program Director Jason Stanfield said “What might be to students with formal training and further training from the IRS, things they can knock out fairly quickly, is to some folks who spend a lot of time fighting in front of the computer or paying a preparer."

The program is available to any student, employee and family of Ball State and Muncie community schools.

Ball State's accounting students will be helping clients through their tax filing process.

The students have all completed required training and exams to train and preparer for the event.

“It is designed to help taxpayers with modern incomes with relatively straightforward tax situations get assistance with income tax completed," said Stanfield.

All tax filings are reviewed by an experienced taxpayer for accuracy.

This program also offers taxpayers who decide they want to do their tax returns on their own the option of  having assistance from the team.

Time slots for this program are available from Feb. 5 through April 10. You can schedule an appointment here
