Ball State Celebrates Chinese New Year

Traditional New Year is the most important festival in China. On that day, people will come back to their hometowns to reunite with all their loved ones. However, Chinese professors and students at Ball State University cannot return home because of work and studying. Therefore, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association holds a gala to celebrate Traditional New Year every year.

Traditional New Year is here again. On January 18, the first rehearsal for the Traditional Chinese New Year gala was held in Pruis Hall.

Zichen Wang, the chairman of CSSA, said that he was very satisfied with the first rehearsal. He hoped this gala could show traditional Chinese culture to everyone.

“This gala could show the traditional Chinese culture to every guest including the president, deans and a lot of American students, so they will know a lot about Chinese culture,” Wang said. “What we want to do is we are trying to gather all Chinese people in this community, so we can celebrate our new year together.”

This gala is completely planned and implemented by the students from different departments in CSSA. What’s more, there are also many American students participating in the performances and doing backstage work.

Austin Call, an American student who will perform as a model in a Chinese traditional costume show, said he is very happy to participate in this performance.

“I am very honored to be invited to produce a performance and take a part in this gala which relates to Chinese culture,” Call said.

The formal gala will start at 4 p.m. on January 25 in Pruis Hall. There will be many performances that include traditional Chinese elements, such as traditional musical instruments playing, Chinese classical dance, and a traditional costumes show.
