Family Video, located near Ball State, is closing it's doors due to being bought out by another store.

MUNCIE, Ind. (NewsLink) — Family Video, located on the corner of Tillotson and Bethel, is closing after a deal made with Dollar General.

Family Video is the largest movie and game rental chain in the U.S. The store came to Muncie in 2001.

Sarah Vise, a Family Video worker said the store is not closing their doors because of streaming competition, but mainly for another reason.

“The real reason why our store is closing is because the company that owns Family Video is going to lease the building to Dollar General,” Vise said.

But this is not the only Family Video store being leased by Dollar General.

Another store worker, Evan Birch, said, “I’ve been looking into it, and Dollar General has already bought out 40 of the 700 Family Video locations across different states.”

One Family Video customer, Maggie Weeks-Foy, was not too happy to hear that the store was closing.

“There are plenty of other dollar stores in the area, I don’t see why we need another one,” Weeks-Foy said.

Once Dollar General opens in the former Family Video building, it will be the fourth location in Muncie.

All items are now for sale at liquidation prices. The store will remain open until Saturday, Sept. 22 from 12 to 8 p.m. daily. The remaining items that are unsold will be shipped to other Family Video stores.
