Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler announced Friday that he will not be running for reelection in 2019.

Tyler has served as Muncie’s 33rd mayor since 2012.

“At 76 I am at a place in my life where I want to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren,” Tyler said. “It has been an honor to serve all of you here today, and the other 70,000 that are at home.”

Tyler expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from the Muncie community during his seven years in office. Tyler said that he will finish his current term as mayor, which ends in 11 months.

Tyler said bringing the Cardinal Greenway to the Muncie community will remain one of his best memories as mayor. He said he plans to improve the Cardinal Greenway as part of his last months in office.

“One initiative we are working on is how to better connect our community through trails, because trails are free,” Tyler said. “Everybody can walk them so it doesn’t make a difference what kind of place you are living in your neighborhood, because you can always walk to another one.”

While Tyler’s administration has been the subject of an ongoing FBI investigation since 2016, he said that it has nothing to do with his choice to not run for reelection.
