Sigma Kappa heads to Indy tomorrow to participate in 13th best Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the nation according to Alzheimer’s Association.

“You get there and it’s crowded and a sea of purple,” said Chelsea Haymaker junior criminal justice major and Sigma Kappa philanthropic vice president. “Everyone brings their dogs and we all support a great cause.”

Ball State Sigma Kappa participates in the walk every year. This year, the team is in the top 30 for donations out of 396 teams and 3,400 participants, according to Alzheimer’s Association.

“We have all 113 members pack up and head out there,” Haymaker said. “I am excited because it’s an event I don’t have to plan and I actually get to enjoy the day with my sisters.”

Sigma Kappa has raised over $3,000 to contribute to the $680,000 that Indy walk participants have raised.

Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. according to Alzheimer’s Association. In fact, every one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

“Alzheimer’s doesn’t have a cure or anyway to slow the progression or prevent it,” Haymaker said. “Really, our goal is to find something. It all goes to research.”
