Former Ball State football player, and current New Orleans Saints wide receiver, Willie Snead has been suspended for the first three games of the NFL regular season for violating the league’s policy on substances of abuse.
Snead was initially suspended four games, but the ban was reduced to three upon appeal. The suspension stems from an incident in which Snead was arrested near his New Orleans home on June 11 and charged with driving while intoxicated and failing to maintain proper control of his vehicle.
Snead registered a .125 percent blood alcohol content at the time of his arrest. The legal limit in the state of Louisiana is .08 percent.
Snead played three seasons for Ball State, from 2011 to 2013. He finished his Cardinals career with 2,991 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns. An undrafted free agent, 2017 will be Snead’s third season with the Saints.
Snead released a statement following his suspension Friday afternoon. “I first want to apologize to my family, friends, teammates, coaches, the Saints Organization, to all the New Orleans Saints fans and people that have followed me my whole career. I am truly disappointed and embarrassed by my actions that have led to this decision,” the statement read.
Snead will be eligible to return when the Saints take on the Miami Dolphins in London on October 1.
