Field hockey opens season with victory over St. Louis

Ball State field hockey plays against St. Louis on Aug. 25 at the Briner Sports Complex. The Cardinals won 5-0. 

Ball State field hockey started the season off with a dominant 5-0 victory against St. Louis on Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals outshot the Billikens 10-3 in the victory, with senior forward Abbey Main scoring a pair of goals. The Cardinals had 6 shots on goals compared to St. Louis' 2.

Redshirt sophomore forward Michelle Shampton made an impact off the bench by earning two assists in 42 minutes of play.

Senior Carly Shannon, redshirt freshman Sierra Jefferson and redshirt freshman Rachel Pereira also scored in the home-opening win.

Neither side was given a yellow or red card in the game. Seven Ball State starters played 50 or more minutes. The Cardinals had 4 corners, while St. Louis had just 2.

Freshman goalkeeper Grace Chavez made two saves in her career opener. The Cardinals recorded assists on all five of their goals.

Next up Ball State plays Ohio at 2 p.m. Sunday.
