US News & World Report placed a Muncie company on one of their “best” nationwide lists, and it’s probably one that you’ve never heard of.

Signature HealthCare of Muncie made US News & World Report’s 2016-2017 “Best Nursing Homes” in the nation list for the month of March. The facility was placed in the top 13 percent of all 15,000 homes nationwide.

Signature HealthCare’s employees said they work hard day in and day out to earn that kind of recognition.

Keona Parkison, administrator-in-training at Signature HealthCare, will soon be in charge of running the building and making sure daily activities are running smoothly.

“Signature HealthCare is revolutionizing health care, and blazing a path, Parkison said. “I want to be in that driver’s seat when the community realizes nursing facilities are great places. They are doing great things for our elders.”

According to multiple employees, the facility is revolutionary. Medical procedures that typically take place at a hospital can be performed on-site at Signature HealthCare.

US News & World Report says it was more strict and difficult for nursing homes to achieve the title of “Best Nursing Home” in 2016 than in the past. However, this didn’t stop Signature HealthCare.

“We’ve always set a goal for ourselves here with our leadership team and with our CNA’s and our nurses and we have always met our goals. We never stop striving to be the best,” Parkison said.

Wilma Carrier, transitional care nurse at Signature HealthCare, has 10 years of experience as a case manager in the hospital setting. She said the Muncie facility stands out from all others because of the company’s focus on teamwork.

“One of the things that I think makes us an outstanding facility is the fact we work as a team… we’re not supervisors, we’re not bosses, we’re not managers, we’re leaders,” Carrier said. “There isn’t any hot rod or soloist here. We work as a team.”

Tyson Nuckols is the manager for the rehabilitation department at Signature HealthCare. He says Signature is one of a kind because of the genuine care they provide.

“I don’t want to work for a company that doesn’t care. Signature really does care about the residents and the family members,” Nuckols said.

Employees also credit spirituality for Signature HealthCare’s success, as they are the only health care facility in the area with a chapel and a full-time chaplain. The chaplain talks with people and tries to comfort them in cases of death.

“This company is built on education, entrepreneurship, and spirituality. Those are the three pillars,” said Carrier.

Parkison says she is confident that Signature HealthCare will still be there when the dust settles on the health care debate in America.

“Signature has taken a stand. We will be here when everything is leveled out with legislation and the Medicare changes. That’s our goal, we are going to ride out the changes in Medicare that are coming and still maintain what we are doing and strive to be the best.”
