Offbeat folk/singer-songwriter music

Is your playlist is getting dull from having the same songs play over and over again? Or are you just looking for a new artist suggestion? Village Green Record storeowner, Travis Harvey, gave us a list of suggested artists to listen to if you like folkish/ singer-songwriter type music. Harvey describes this style of music as a truth and storytelling genre.

“These artists focus on telling stories rather than hitting all the right notes when they sing,” said Harvey.

If you find yourself listening to artists such as John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Mumford and Sons or Bob Dylan here is a list of recommended musicians that are similar.

If you’re looking for something “refreshing” that has an emphasis on telling a story, you might try listening to Sun Kil Moon.

If you love music with an emphasis on strings, Agnes Obel is what Harvey describes as “something to get lost in.”

If a mix of country and folky music is what you’re in to, give Phosephorescent or Elliott Smith a shot. Harvey describes it as a “yearning” style of music.

If you are looking for something with more of a “haunting” quality to it, try listening to Marissa Nadler.

An artist that Harvey describes as more of a classic would be Leonard Cohen.
