Ball State women's tennis hosts the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies at the Northwest YMCA in Muncie at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The teams last met in the 2014-15 season when the Cardinals won 7-0. In the two years previous to that, Ball State had also won both matches against Oakland. Head coach Max Norris said it’ll be a welcome challenge for his team.

“I think Oakland, level wise, will be a step up from maybe our last match. I think they’ve got like five or six new players,” Norris said. “I expect them to play with a lot of energy. They’re going to be very excited to play us with the ‘nothing to lose’ mentality.”

Norris also talked about how Oakland, who plays in the Horizon League, might be using the outcome of its match with Ball State as a barometer for how well they can do in their competitions this season. He previously mentioned this when talking about how Butler’s players might have been looking to claim the singles victory over one the Cardinals.

This talk of other teams comparing themselves to 11-2 Ball State and, in some cases, looking up to what it has achieved goes to show how far they have come this year. However, Norris maintained the position he has taken for the whole year.

“We’ll be focusing on ourselves again,” he said. “I’ll be focusing on getting everyone prepared and ready to hopefully contribute so that as we go into the last stretch of our season, specifically into our league play, I’ll have pretty good idea of what each player brings to the table because I’ve hopefully seen them in different situations by now.”

Oakland won its last game against Chicago State 5-2, but holds a record of 4-6 on the season. On the other hand, Ball State are on a fine run of six wins in as many games.

The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Northwest YMCA in Muncie.
