Ball State women's swimming and diving is back on the road this weekend as the team heads to Allendale, Michigan, to take on Grand Valley State.
The Cardinals have been up and down this season with one win, three losses and a second-place finish in an eight-team meet earlier this season. Their lone win was at home, but they are hoping to change that this weekend. Head coach Kristy Patterson has been happy with the team’s hard work so far this season.
"The team was pretty tired from the weeks training before," Patterson said. "We were also in a new environment that we weren't used too, so that played a factor as well."
To prepare, Ball State has switched up tactics, focusing on swimming through the feeling of being broken down. Patterson doesn’t want to change their routine too much, though, because everyone's used to the routine.
Patterson said the team is more prepared for the meet this weekend because they have swam in Grand Valley's pool before. They know the atmosphere and what it's like. Patterson said the times should be better this weekend due to the meet last weekend. They can learn from the previous meets to make themselves better.
Grand Valley State's women's team is 4-2 this season. Patterson is also aware they are a Division II school, and a good one too.
“Grand Valley is a smaller Division II school but good competition for us,” Patterson said. “Grand Valley has some fast swimmers, but our the team knows how to handle it.”
And while not every opponent supports a diving team, Grand Valley State does. Ball State's divers swept the top three spots in both the one-meter and three-meter dives in their last meet at Illinois State.
Freshman Sophie Bader was named co-MAC swimmer of the week last week. Her top time of the season is currently tied for ninth in the Mid-American Conference in the 100-yard butterfly and seventh in the 200-yard butterfly. Bader also leads the team in both of these events.
“"We are obviously so happy for [Bader]," Patterson said. "She has been working really hard and so have the rest of the girls. It's hard to just pick one each week."”
The meet will begin at 1 p.m. Nov. 19 at Grand Valley State.
