Friday, Sept. 16

Soccer defeated Morehead State 4-0

Saturday, Sept. 17

Football defeated Eastern Kentucky 41-14

Women's Volleyball defeated UNCG 3-2, Valparaiso 3-1 and lost to No. 19 Ohio State 0-3.

Field Hockey lost 0-7 to Penn State

Sunday, Sept. 18

Field Hockey lost 1-4 to Iowa

It was a busy family weekend at Ball State. Athletics featured home games for football, soccer and women's volleyball and field hockey hit the road for the fourth straight weekend.

Football

With Family Weekend wrapped around Ball State football's home opener, a confident air spread across the Cardinals' sideline.

The swagger started with head coach Mike Neu — he said he told the players they wouldn't leave the field unless the Cardinals beat Eastern Kentucky to improve to 2-1.

And they did, in a 41-14 blowout.

Women's volleyball

Head coach Kelli Miller recorded her third and fourth collegiate coaching wins as Ball State hosted the Active Ankle Challenge. In a match up with University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Cardinals pulled out a five-set victory (25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11).

Later Friday evening Ball State took on in-state rival Valparaiso. The Cardinals led by junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora won a four-set match 3-1 (25-23, 25-9, 21-25, 25-17). Mangapora had a game high 20 kills.

With a four game winning streak on the line the Cardinals battled No. 19 Ohio State on Saturday night. After coming out strong in set one, the Cardinals couldn't handle the Buckeyes being swept in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-14).

Mid-American Conference play begins for the Cardinals next weekend as they host Central Michigan Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. -- Elizabeth Wyman, assistant sports editor

Soccer

It was an emotional Family Weekend reunion for senior defender Lorina White. White's mother, Laura Jackson, who is from Poughkeepsie, New York, came to Muncie to surprise her daughter for Senior Night. White scored a goal in the game and the Cardinals defeated Morehead State 4-0.

The Cardinals begin Mid-American Conference play Friday, Sept. 23 when they take on Buffalo.

Field hockey

Ball State Field hockey (4-4) went 0-2 this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, losing against No. 15 Iowa (6-2), 1-4, and No. 4 Penn State (8-0), 0-7.

The Cardinals got off to a good start against Iowa, taking the lead in the first half, 1-0, via a goal by senior midfielder Mikayla Mooney, her third of the season. They would take the lead into the second half but only for a short while before the Hawkeyes would score four in the second half to take the win.

The team has now lost four of its last five games after getting the season started 3-0. Three of the team’s losses have come against top 25 ranked opponents (No. 15 Iowa, No. 4 Penn State and No. 17 Northwestern.)

The team opens up Mid-American Conference play for their next game against Kent State on Friday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. in Kent, Ohio. The Cardinals will play two more road games against Ohio and Michigan State, before finally returning home on Monday, Oct. 3 against Ohio State at 3 p.m. --Dylan Grissom, field hockey reporter
