When dorm food isn’t cutting it anymore but it’s too cold or inconvenient to go out, delivery services come in handy. However, some restaurants don’t have delivery services available — that’s where Tranzind comes in.

Tranzind Delivery is an organization that partners with local restaurants to deliver food in the Muncie area.

Matt Van Hoosen, a senior pre-medicine major, is a driver for Tranzid.

Van Hoosen began working for Tranzind after moving in with another driver. He does about six deliveries per day, depending on how many drivers are working at the same time. He likes the work because it’s flexible.

“It’s a great job for a college student with a large school commitment,” Van Hoosen said. “I can be working a six-hour shift, but only be driving for three. The other part of the time I can be at home doing homework but still on the clock.”

So far, Van Hoosen hasn’t had any problems with customers during deliveries. Although customers pay online, he’s received a few cash tips.

“Drivers get a lot of freedom,” said Jordan Presley, market manager and co-owner of Tranzind. "They can make about $15 an hour and work from home until they're called for a delivery."

Presley, along with fellow Ball State alumnus Nick Chapel and partner Wilson Ganga, founded the business. Chapel and Presley got the idea after watching elderly people struggling at Walmart last winter during the cold weather.

“It was too cold for people to be outside,” Chapel said. “We started with the idea of grocery delivery and moved into restaurants.”

Tranzind opened for business in May 2015. The first day, they got one order. However, now they’re averaging 40-50 orders a day. The business currently has partnerships with restaurants like Scotty’s Brewhouse, Noodles and Company, IHOP and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Chapel said they target restaurants that don’t already deliver.

Tranzind currently has 11 drivers on staff but the goal is to have 15. Currently, two drivers work in the mornings, and there are four or five who work in the evenings. This number can be higher depending on how many orders are coming in, Presley said. He's hoping to get more drivers soon.

Customers not only go through the whole ordering and paying process online, but can also get notifications throughout the process, so they know when the driver is on their way.

Tranzind is also a marketing company, promoting the restaurants it delivers from at Ball State sporting events. There are 10 brand ambassadors who put on events and run digital and print marketing campaigns for restaurants.

Presley and Chapel are pleased with how the business is growing. Presley hopes the business will eventually be for both restaurants and groceries. Chapel attributed the success to the simplicity of the process as well.

“It’s scaled up faster than we expected,” Presley said. “In the first month we had 30 orders. We’re projecting up to 100 orders a day when it gets colder outside.”
