Memorial Day honors those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originating following the Civil War, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971, according to History.com. For many, Memorial Day also unofficially marks the beginning of summer.
Here are some events for those wishing to observe the holiday.
144th Memorial Day Program
11 a.m. May 30, Beech Grove Cemetery
America’s Hometown Band will be performing the music at this ceremony honoring military personnel. Taps, along with other selections, will be performed. Mayor Dennis Tyler will be speaking, as well as cemetery officials and local military organization representatives. This event is free and open to the public.
Memorial Day Breakfast – Muncie Sailing Club
9 a.m. May 30, Prairie Creek Lake
If you know a member of the MSC and are interested in joining yourself, ask if you can come to this event. There will be casseroles, fruit, coffee and orange juice. For more information, contact Maggi Hoyt.
Memorial Day Parade
10 a.m. May 30, New Castle
This will be a traditional Memorial Day parade. Participants have the opportunity to be voted Best Theme, Most Patriotic, Vintage Auto, Most Unique and Crowd Pleaser. Bloomington Memorial Day Service
9:30 a.m. May 30, Bloomington
There will be a service at Valhalla Cemetery in Bloomington. Governor Mike Pence and First Lady Karen will be present at this service. This is free and open to the public.
Grissom Air Museum
10 a.m. May 30, Kokomo
Grissom Air Museum will be open until 4 p.m. hosting military speakers. General admission is $6, children 5 and under are free. Seniors and military personnel (past or active) receive a discount.
