Ball State’s athletes traded their uniforms for dresses and suits Monday night for the second annual Chirpies, the athletics award show presented by Ball State Sports Link.
This year, the event aired live on the ESPN 3 as athletes were awarded for their work both on and of the field. Ball State senior golfer Albert Jennings co-hosted the event with junior gymnast Jala Washington.
Jennings’ teammate Johnny Watts was named male athlete of the year after winning the MAC golf title as a freshman this past year. Watts definitely deserved it, says Jennings.
“The night was honestly a blur,” Jennings said.
Senior women’s basketball player Nathalie Fontaine won the female athlete of the year award. The native of Sweden scored her 2,000th point on senior night with her family in attendance. Fontaine is Ball State women’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer.
Ball State women’s soccer coach Craig Roberts received coach of the year. Roberts led the Cardinals to a regular season MAC championship after ending the season 10-1 in conference play, the best in school history.
Senior men’s basketball player Bo Calhoun won the breakthrough award. Calhoun and the rest of the men’s basketball team also received the comeback award. The team went from ending the 2014-2015 season with just seven wins to tying for first in the MAC this season.
Junior swimmer Tanner Barton received the Caring Cardinal award for his work as a national spokesperson for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
