Second Harvest Food Bank and the Ball State Clay Guild will host fundraising events this week that will help feed the nearly 22,000 individuals that are food insecure in Delaware County.

Chili Bowl

Ball State’s Clay Guild will be holding its 10th annual Chili Bowl Wednesday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Art and Journalism Studio Room, across from the bookstore on the first floor.

Ted Neal, Associate Professor of Art and creator of the Chili Bowl fundraiser said the event is similar in concept to what might be served at a food kitchen, but it is about more than just purchasing a bowl of soup.

“They take a bowl home with them and hopefully it remains a reminder every time they use it that there are those out there that are less fortunate,” said Neal.

Bowls of chili will cost $2.75. Ceramic bowls, created by members of the Clay Guild, will be on sale for $6.75. The cost of a bowl of soup along with the ceramic bowl will be $9.

The money raised at the event will be distributed to Second Harvest Food Bank, Muncie Mission and Harvest Soup Kitchen.

Fill-a-Bowl

Second Harvest Food Bank is holding Delaware County’s first Fill-a-Bowl fundraiser and annual meeting on Friday, March 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Food Bank’s community room.

“Fill-a-bowl originated from an idea of empty bowls that other food banks were doing across the United States and we wanted it to have a more positive title,” said Karen McTague, director of Development and Fundraising at Second Harvest Food Bank.

McTague said Second Harvest can generate four meals for every one dollar that is donated to them.

“We appreciate food drives that people have for us and all food we receive, but when someone gives us a cash dollar it impacts our buying power,” McTague said. “We can buy more with that dollar than if someone were to take a dollar and go to the grocery store and buy a couple of cans of green beans.”

Second Harvest Food Bank President and CEO Tim Kean will give a presentation about how the organization serves Delaware County. After the presentation, those in attendance will fill out pledge cards and make their individual donations to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Vera Mae’s, Morrison Woods Health Campus and Panera Bread will each donate a different type of soup to be served at the event. Blondie’s Cookies will donate cookies.
