Iconic Female Characters: Mikasa Ackerman

In honor of Women’s History Month, Byte is doing a month long Byteing Question about the most iconic female characters and why they matter. Every weekend, two writers will look at two characters that are important to them in many different ways. Today, we look at Mikasa Ackerman.

Fans of the series Attack on Titan know just how strong and powerful Mikasa Ackerman is. She graduated at the top of her class. She has several solo titan kills under her belt. And she takes no crap from anyone or anything, be it human or titan. Mikasa is someone that you either love or hate, depending on how you feel towards the other characters. But no matter how you feel towards her, she is still a very integral character to the series, and a great representation of women in nerd culture.

Mikasa is one of those characters that stands out against the stereotypical lead female anime character. Shes not stalking her senpai or saving the world via magical transformations. Rather, she is a strong woman who has dealt with so many tragedies in her life that no person her age should have to endure. Like seeing her parents get brutally murdered in front of her. Watching her adoptive mother get eaten by a titan. Seeing her classmates and comrades being eaten and ripped apart by titans. Just to name a few. I really admire Mikasa for having dealt through all this, yet still have the courage to follow Eren to join the Survey Corps.

Another aspect that I enjoy about Mikasa besides how she is different from stereotypical anime characters is her physical strength. After Eren rescues her from her parentsmurderers when she was a kid, Mikasa devotes herself to becoming stronger all for his sake. In my eyes, she becomes a valuable asset to the Survey Corps, proving herself in missions by being a very effective titan killer.

All in all, I believe that Mikasa is a great representation of women in nerd culture. Shes extremely strong and takes no crap from anyone, which is freaking awesome. If you need someone in your squad, Mikasa Ackerman would definitely be your best bet.
