The "talk rock" band, Listener, will bring a unique type of music to Be Here Now on March 31 at 10 p.m., following Victoria Armstrong, Sit Kitty Sit and followed by Frontier Folk Nebraska.

Contrary to their name, the band does more talking than listening. Their songs feature long, poetic monologues accompanied by a guitar, drum set and trumpet. It’s an approach to rock that emphasizes the spoken word rather than the music.

Listener started out as a solo act in 2002 but has evolved into a whole band, with Kris Rochelle on drums, Jon Terry on guitar and Dan Smith performing the monologues and the bass.

The band has released three albums: "Return to Struggleville," "Wooden Heart" and "Time is a Machine." All are available on CD and two on vinyl.

Dan Smith explained their approach to albums as a type of poetry and rock blended together.

“I write a poetic speaking style of lyric," he said. "We make rock music and try to make our songs from what we like to listen to and smush it all together."

The band is currently in the midst of a world tour, playing all over America, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.
