On Feb. 5, the pair defeated Indiana University standouts Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette 7-6 at the No. 1 doubles position.

Two days later, Andersen and Stutz nearly pulled off the victory against Fighting Irish tandem Eddy Covalschi and Alex Lawson, losing 6-4 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind.

Both No. 53 Indiana and No. 36 Notre Dame went on to sweep Ball State as a whole, winning the matches 4-0 and 7-0, respectively.

The weekend results bring Andersen and Stutz’s doubles record to 3-2 on the young season.

Individually, each player garners a high level of respect from fellow teammates and coaches on a Cardinals squad that lacks a senior presence.

Ball State men’s head tennis coach, Bill Richards, spoke highly of his players’ leadership roles within the team.

“Andersen has been a great player for us from day one,” Richards said. “Everybody on our team respects [him] tremendously and looks up to him because he’s an incredibly hard worker. He’s more of a quiet leader, leading by example.”

Stutz received similar high praise from his head coach. Richards detailed the career-threatening injury Stutz suffered in high school, a compound fracture of his right leg, and how he has been able to bounce back in such a big way from it.

“He played hurt for two years [in college], and for the first time now he’s actually 100 percent,” Richards said. “[Stutz] is a guy that has become a leader in his own way, and guys definitely follow him.”

Andersen and Stutz will look to lead Ball State when the Cardinals battle the Xavier Musketeers in Cincinnati, Ohio. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
