Six restaurants to help you stay warm this winter

Winter has officially arrived, and that means keeping warm is a top priority. Here are some Muncie restaurant options for keeping warm this season.

The Cup

The Cup offers multiple hot drinks, including a variety of coffee drinks like espresso, macchiato and lattés. For non-coffee drinkers, there is also the option of chai (served as a tea latté) or a slew of green, black and herbal teas such as Earl grey and pomegranate raspberry, said barista Brandon Shawver. Peppermint or toasted marshmallow syrup can be added to traditional hot chocolate. The Cup also serves hot sandwiches, like their turkey-pesto panini, made with turkey, pesto, red pepper and Swiss cheese.

The Caffeinery

This coffee house specializes in gourmet coffee, tea and espresso beverages. Some of the most popular picks for the winter season are the salted caramel mocha and the gingerbread mocha. One of their drinks, called the Steve Albini, is made with grade-A maple syrup and cinnamon. For peanut butter lovers, there is the Fluffer Nutter, made with peanut butter and toasted marshmallows. Owner Frank Reber said everything on the menu is “solid” — there is no one drink he would recommend. “Every [employee] tries the new drinks, and if it doesn’t pass everyone’s palette, it doesn’t go on the menu,” Reber said.

Concannon’s Bakery and Café

Concannon’s Bakery offers six different homestyle soups each day. Soups include chicken noodle, chili, chicken gumbo and potato soup; however, there are other options on different days. Vegetarian soups are also available. Soups are served with a warm dinner roll.

MCL Restaurant and Bakery

Located in the Muncie Mall, MCL has an all-homemade menu, most of which changes daily. Hot sides such as broccoli with cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes and carrots are offered with entrees each day. Chili is also served. For vegetable lovers, there is vegetable soup and a vegetable plate, which consists of three hot vegetables and is served daily.

The Wedge

For those who love grilled cheese, The Wedge is the place to go. Most sandwiches served are grilled with cheese, such as the State Fair, a mix of cheddar, mozzarella, bacon, grilled chicken and ranch on Italian bread. Tomato soup is also served, a classic side to the traditional grilled cheese. The soup of the day is also an option, such as bacon cheeseburger chowder or sausage potato kale.

Panera Bread

Panera offers a variety of soups, including New England clam chowder, cream of chicken and wild rice, vegetarian autumn squash soup and baked potato soup. A similar option is a broth bowl, consisting of noodles, vegetables, sometimes chicken and a special broth. Warm paninis are also an option with Panera's fontenga chicken or steak and white cheddar options.
