'Final Fantasy VII' remake to include Unreal Engine 4

The Final Fantasy VII remake will be built using a different engine than developer Square Enix’s own. The game will be made using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.

The announcement made today by Epic capped off a busy weekend for the much-anticipated title. Epic previously showed gameplay during PlayStation Experience, and it was revealed that the game will be a “multi-part series,” in order not to oversaturate the game.

"We realize how special Final Fantasy VII is to fans, and we place our trust in Unreal Engine 4 technology and tools to help deliver this long-awaited remake, crafted for modern platforms," Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase said in a press release.

While there is yet to be a release date for the first part or chapter of the game, it is slated for a PS4 release first, with an Xbox One and/or PC rollout to follow.
