Freshman dance majors get one opportunity this semester to publicly showcase their talents, and Oct. 16 is the day.

The annual Works in Motion show features performances from students of all grade levels in dance styles such as tap, ballet and jazz. Admission is $1 at the door of Korsgaard Dance Studio in Ball Gymnasium, and dancers take the stage at 7 p.m.

The night is designed to bring students and faculty together share an evening of dance, said Susan Koper,a Ball State dance instructor.

“Every year one faculty member choreographs a piece for the freshmen and they get to perform the piece at the show, so it’s a really special night for our freshmen that are just starting in the program,” Koper said. “Every time I talk to one of the freshmen their face lights up.”

New faculty member Anne Beck choreographed the freshman jazz piece. She took the opportunity to get to know the new students in the department after not being scheduled to teach freshman dancer students

“I was eager to work with students as much as possible since other concerts and musicals were already assigned before I was hired,” Beck said. “Getting to know our students and their artistic growth in and out of the classroom is important to guide their success and journey here at BSU, so I very much wanted this opportunity.”

Beck said her students have been enthusiastic learners during the process of building and growing their piece and that they show professionalism in practicing a new style that is unfamiliar to some.

“Our freshman dance major students are artists to look out for,” Beck said. “Working with them has been a joy.”

Esther Bower, a freshman dance major, said her favorite part of the experience has been learning the choreography of the piece. In the future, she wants to use her passion of dance to bring joy and inspiration to those around her.

“Jazz is one of my favorite dance styles, and I’ve really missed it so I was thrilled when I found out we were doing a jazz piece,” Bower said. “Wherever this passion takes me, I just know I want to use dance to bring joy and inspiration to those around me.”
