Six DIY costume ideas for Halloween

Instead of buying a pre-made Halloween costume from the store, try one of these scare-easy do-it-yourself options. Prices are taken from Walmart.com.

1. Instagram Post

Obsessed with social media? Go to a party dressed as a favorite app. All that’s needed is a foam board that can accommodate a face-size cut out ($5 at the Ball State University Official Bookstore). Paint the image of an Instagram phone screenshot on the foam board or print out an Instagram phone screenshot on multiple pages of color. Keep it casual and comfy by wearing regular clothes for the “selfie.”

2. Rosie the Riveter

This American cultural icon is a great go-to for a quick, last-minute costume. Start off with a blue button-up shirt ($15). Make sure to tuck pants in and roll the sleeves up. Throw hair into a messy bun and wrap a red bandana ($1) around the head. Leave some hair in the front to create a big pin curl. Make sure to put on red lipstick ($4) and winged eyeliner ($4).

3. Scooby Doo and Co.

Get friends involved and dress as members of the mystery gang. For Daphne, wear a purple dress with a green scarf, which could be found at Goodwill. Make sure to wear purple or pink shoes ($22).

For Velma, wear an orange sweater with a red skirt, which could also be found at Goodwill. You can use a red bob wig ($15) or temporarily dye hair red. Put on some hipster glasses and wear orange socks with black shoes.

For Shaggy, wear a green t-shirt ($7) with maroon pants. Make sure to wear dark-colored shoes.

For Fred, wear a blue collared shirt ($14) with a plain, white sweater or sweatshirt ($7) on top. Make sure to tie an orange scarf ($8) or wide ribbon as an ascot.

Carry around a stuffed animal dog to make the gang complete.

Bonus suggestion: Constantly unmask other party-goers.

4. Minions

Dress as the yellow stars of this summer’s Minion movie. All it takes is a yellow shirt ($7.50), jean shorts ($8) and black suspenders ($10). Create their eyes by cutting and shortening paper cups and drawing a black circle for the pupil. Attach the cups to a headband and wear around the head.

5. Where’s Waldo

Keep it simple by dressing up as Waldo or Wenda from the “Where’s Waldo” book series. Wear a red and white striped shirt ($23) with a red beanie ($8) and jeans. Dot freckles on the face with brown eyeliner and wear circular glasses.

Bonus suggestion: Stand in the background of every possible party picture.

6. Toga

Now, for the simplest costume of them all. Use sheets to create a Greek god or goddess look. Wrap the sheets like a toga and tie them with a neutral-colored belt or rope ($5). Wear gold-colored jewelry to add to the royalty look.
